AIMS AND SCOPE OF EPC2006
The European Population Conference 2006, Population challenges in ageing societies, is a general scientific conference on population issues that are relevant to Europe. It will be held in the University of Liverpool, UK between 21st and 24th June 2006.
The conference is open to people who are interested in or are directly engaged in population issues, whether from a scientific, policy, business or a more general perspective. Its main aim is to provide insights into contemporary and past population trends, patterns and contexts of population dynamics, both globally but more specifically in Europe, where there are clear population challenges presented by the broad context of ageing societies.
Many of these challenges have been given particular prominence in the Green Paper of the Employment and Social Affairs Directorate of the European Commission, Confronting demographic change: a new solidarity between the generations (March 2005). This Conference therefore facilitates timely detailed perspectives on and discussion of a range of what are major issues for the development of European economics and societies.
The conference is organised as a major activity of the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS), the focus of the International Organising Committee, in association with the Department of Geography in the University of Liverpool, UK, and a National Organising Committee.
A plenary session will be addressed by Professor Ian Diamond, Chief Executive of the Economic and Social Research Council of UK, and a leading UK demographer, on the theme, Scientific challenges in ageing research.
SPONSORS
The preparation and activities of the conference have been greatly enhanced by the generosity of six major sponsors:
The European Union (EU)
The Economic and Social Research Council of UK (ESRC)
The Institut National d’Etudes Demographiques, France (INED),
The Population Investigation Committee (PIC),
The Wellcome Trust
The University of Liverpool.
CONFERENCE STRUCTURE
The scientific programme of the conference is structured into one plenary session, linked with the official opening on the evening of Wednesday, 21st June, and a set of over 70 formal sessions over the next two and a half days, working from 09.00 till 17.30. These include 6 timetabled slots with 8 simultaneous sessions, a common poster session and a closing ceremony with awards.
Plenary SessionThe conference will begin with a plenary session which will include a formal Opening Ceremony and Welcome, and an address by Professor Ian Diamond, formerly Professor of Social Statistics in the University of Southampton, UK, a Past President of the British Society for Population Studies, and currently Chief Executive of the ESRC of UK. Professor Diamond’s theme is Scientific challenges in ageing research: the UK Research Councils’ contribution.
Simultaneous SessionsThe main working sessions of the conference will be in 8 parallel sessions in each of 8 programme slots: 3 on Thursday, 3 on Friday, and 2 on Saturday.
These sessions are structured round twelve general themes which were identified at the outset by the IOC/NOC, each with a theme convenor:
Fertility
Family and Households
Reproductive Health
Health, Morbidity and Mortality
Regional and Subregional Population Dynamics
International Migration and Migrant Populations
Population Ageing
Population, Development and Environment
Data and Methods
Population and History
Population and Economics
Population and Culture
In addition potential participants had the opportunity to contribute to an Open Session
These themes generated nearly 500 paper abstracts submitted, of which over 350 were selected for presentation in the thematic sessions, and a further 180 invited to contribute to the Poster Session. Both types of sessions are considered strictly on an equal footing.
