IN LIVERPOOL

Welcome arrangements

Most participants will be arriving by air - to John Lennon International Airport Liverpool or to Manchester International Airport – and most of you will have made your flight arrangements by now.

For those arriving at John Lennon Liverpool, there will be an EPC2006 Welcome Point in the arrivals hall, near the Tourist Information Office, on Wednesday and Thursday 08.00-22.00. You can get a bus from just outside the airport terminal to the centre of town (every half hour at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour – journey time is approx. 45 minutes). There are bus stops near the conference hotels. Alternatively, if there are 3 or 4 together, it will be worthwhile sharing taxi to your hotel (approx. £12, but measured by the official taxi meter).

For those arriving at Manchester Airport , go to the Manchester Airport train station (located between Terminals 1 and 2) and take a train to Liverpool Lime Street (either direct or changing at Manchester Piccadilly). Liverpool Lime Street is the destination station.

Liverpool Lime Street is also the station for those of you who are travelling from London by train.

Most of the conference hotels are located within 5 minutes walk of Lime Street Station. In the station there will be a Welcome Point (near the exit point for platforms 1-6) for EPC2006 on Wednesday and Thursday 08.00-22.00.

For those of you arriving by car, there are signs to the University of Liverpool from the major motorways. The University has agreed to waive the need for car parking permits for conference participants in the university car parks, but a sticker for your car windscreen to indicate that you are attending EPC2006 will be available where necessary at the Registration Desk.

 Central Liverpool

The conference hotels are mostly located in Central Liverpool (see map of Central Liverpool) at about 15 minutes walk, via Mount Pleasant and the Metropolitan Cathedral, to the Rendall Building for registration and the main conference activities.

The conference begins on Midsummers Day and during the World Cup, so we will hope for good weather to enjoy the long evenings. There is no organised social programme as such. Liverpool is a busy city with lots of tourist facilities and attractions by day and by night, and participants can take as much advantage of these as they wish.

Whether it is museums or art galleries or music of whatever taste you seek, or whether it is just to soak up the atmosphere of a Liverpool night club or bar (e.g. watching Netherlands defeat (?) Argentina - Wednesday evening at 20.00: or Czech Republic vs Italy – Thursday 15.00; full schedule at http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com ), Liverpool will meet your needs.

You will be given a great deal of tourist information in your conference packs when you arrive. Many of you will wish to consult in advance the abundant tourist web material: see www.visitliverpool.com .
